Why use a VPN and how to choose the best one

In today's digital era, privacy and security on the internet are very important. Why? Because everyone is an interesting target. For example, such phishing doesn't ask who it's going to hit. It just hits a lot of people, with the expectation that someone will always get caught. If not you, then someone else will.

Our identity in the online environment / digital footprint can also be interesting for many reasons. In general, please be vigilant and follow at least basic safety rules. The topic of a healthy and safe relationship with technology on my blog devotes countless articles.

One of the key tools for ensuring secure internet traffic is a VPN (virtual private network). This article aims to provide a basic overview - what a VPN is, how it works, what its advantages and disadvantages are, when it is appropriate to use it, and tips on some of the most common VPN providers, along with approximate prices.

What is a VPN and how does it work?

A Virtual Private Network encrypts a user's internet connection and protects their data from being tracked. Connecting via a VPN creates a secure "tunnel" between your device and the internet, hiding your real IP address and increasing your anonymity. This encryption makes it impossible for ISPs and third parties to track you, but it's important to choose a VPN provider with a 'no-logs' policy so that they don't keep any information about your activity. This is key to protecting your privacy.

This tunnel can be created for a computer, tablet or mobile phone. VPN is most often in the form of an application where you click "Connect" and you are on the VPN. You don't have to worry about any technical details, everything happens in the background.

Benefits of using a VPN

VPNs offer a number of benefits, particularly in terms of privacy and anonymity. They secure connections on public Wi-Fi networks, which can be vulnerable to cyberattacks. Thanks to the encryption provided by a VPN, the risk of security breaches is significantly reduced. Or they simply help users pretend to be somewhere else than they really are. Why? Want to watch something on American Netflix when you're in Europe? Or bypass some local content restrictions (for example iBroadcasting not available outside the Czech Republic)? These are exactly the scenarios.

For companies and remote workers, a VPN is essential because it allows secure access to sensitive company data from anywhere, regardless of the security of the connection. That's why you often get a VPN from your employer as part of your company's equipment. You don't have to deal with the technical details and you often only encounter a VPN as an icon in Windows, for example in the form of FortiClient, a solution from Sophos or OpenVPN.

Disadvantages and pitfalls of VPN

The downside of a VPN is that it can slow down your connection speed, as encrypting and routing data requires some processing power. It's also a good idea to choose your VPN provider carefully.

Free services can be tempting, but they are often not as secure and can track user activity. There are also free VPN clients such as Chrome extensions that have malware (used to disrupt, damage or gain unauthorized access to the system and its data). Choosing a reputable provider is therefore key to ensuring security. Don't know how to choose? Ask your friends or get a solution recommended by someone you trust.

When is a VPN necessary?

A VPN is essential when connecting to public Wi-Fi, such as in coffee shops or airports, where the risk of attack is higher. A VPN is also essential for remotely accessing corporate systems and sensitive data, and for bypassing geo-restricted content, especially in countries with limited internet access.

Most common VPN providers and approximate prices

There are many commercial VPN services on the market, some of which are affordable and others are focused on providing high security and speed. As written above, the best option is a corporate solution. If you do not have access to one, then there are basically two options for getting a VPN. The first is that you can purchase a VPN as a service with your current antivirus. Most manufacturers offer it.

The second is to purchase a separate commercial service. Below are three tips for those from the more well-known and established commercial VPN providers:

  1. Proton VPN – Provides a high level of security and privacy; suggested price is $9.99 per month.
  2. NordVPN – Provides strong encryption and a large server network, the suggested price is $12.99 per month. They have various big discounts and promotions for longer subscription periods (e.g. 2 years).
  3. Windscribe – A good solution and even free for limited use. If you don't want to pay and want to test the VPN's functionality first, give them a chance. But I remind you how expensive something free is in general.

In conclusion

A VPN is a useful tool for increasing cybersecurity, privacy, and digital wellbeing. It is suitable for everyday browsing, remote work, and accessing sensitive data, making it an essential tool for anyone who wants to protect their data and online safety.
