Social Dilemma documentary - What to take away from it.

Documentary Social Dilemma (https://www.csfd.cz/film/812238-socialni-dilema/prehled/). At least two people tell me about him every week. Thanks a lot for that by the way! The acting part is said to be awkward, but otherwise dense.

And it is also said to be missing there instructions on what to do with it. Here is:

  1. Try to understand how online works (for yourself or your children).
  2. Delete social networking apps from your phone.
  3. Set usage limits and stick to them (or use apps that monitor and limit usage – like Screen Time, Freedom, Momentum).
  4. Be kind to yourself - small steps are enough.
  5. Watch what it does to you and get ready to be abstinent.

It's worth it, really. And the abs will pass in no time. Then you will have a good feeling, more peace of mind and more time.
Sure, you miss a lot of news from the world, but honestly - do you really need it in your life? Use technology, but don't let it use you.

The seven key messages from the document are:

  1. Technology companies have the same goal as other companies - to make money. The business model is clear - the more we are connected to the screen, the more profit the top generates. It must also be said that the more we look at the screen, the less we live our own lives. I find that the saddest thing about it.
  2. Point 1 determines the rules of the game - companies do everything possible and impossible for us to be in their network, application, etc. For example, they use the weak points of the human psyche. Is it on purpose? Maybe yes maybe no. It probably doesn't matter in the end. What matters is that it is happening. And it's good to know about it.
  3. The truth is generally boring and doesn't sell. If you arouse strong emotions in a person - ideally the strongest ones - anger or fear - then you have a higher probability of engagement (and it goes especially well with the one on the network!)
  4. All content is tailored to each of us, and the algorithm shows what earns the most (engagement / emotion / increases screen time). He doesn't care if he's showing us a chocolate covered kitten or a burning person. Nothing against the kitten, but the human gets more human attention. Unfortunately.
  5. The technological possibilities are essentially unlimited today. Opposing them is our brain, an approximately kilo and a half big thing, which is not evolutionarily prepared for such a thing.
  6. Those services THEY ARE NOT for free. A third party subsidizes them. And unsurprisingly, he wants something in return. Ideally sell us something - most often a product or an opinion.
  7. Technology is not a priori good or bad. They can help a lot, but also hurt a lot. It depends on how we use them.
